The world’s largest sea turtle emerges from the water onto the sand at this precise moment. It’s a magnificent leatherback turtle that appears to have emerged from the water to relax on the sand.
These turtles are the largest of all types, and seeing them relaxing on the beach is a rare sight. Their tear-shaped body and a pair of huge fins set them apart. They can readily navigate the waters and adjust to currents as a result of these. Leatherback sea turtles have longer front fins than any other sea turtle, but this isn’t their only distinguishing feature.
The most noticeable difference is that they lack bones and a carapace, but their skin is extremely thick and resembles leather, hence their name. Leatherback turtles are dark grey or black in color with a few white patches. They’ve been developed to withstand the cooler seas so they can dive deep for jellyfish, their favorite snack!
Leatherback turtles are found primarily in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, around the equator. Some have been discovered off the coast of Central America. They prefer to travel alone around the planet, only meeting up with other turtles when it’s time to reproduce. They deposit their eggs on a beach, much like other turtles, and let the baby turtles find their way to the sea on their own.
Leatherback turtles are among the last survivors of a turtle species that has been known to exist for more than 100 million years. Leatherback turtles were previously widespread, with the exception of the Arctic and Antarctic oceans. However, this has altered over time, and the leatherback turtle population is now quickly declining.
